Toyota Tops Global Vehicle Sales

Our cars and trucks keep flying off the shelves… folks just can’t get enough of ’em!

Toyota - black

TOKYO (AP) — #Toyota kept its lead over rivals Volkswagen and General Motors as the world’s top-selling automaker in the first nine months of the year, Monday reporting record sales of 7.615 million vehicles, up nearly 3 percent from the previous year.

Volkswagen said earlier this month it sold 7.40 million vehicles for January-September, barely edging out General Motors Co. in the closely watched auto sales race. GM reported sales of 7.372 million cars and trucks worldwide earlier this month.

Japanese automaker Toyota was in first place in the first half with sales of almost 5.1 million. It finished first last year with a record 9.98 million sales, and is projecting annual sales of 10.2 million vehicles this year. That would be an auto industry record.

Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid, and Lexus luxury models, is doing well despite difficulties in its home Japanese market, where a rise in the sales tax has dampened spending overall, especially auto purchases.

Toyota has publicly played down its spot at the top, saying its focus is on delivering good cars, one at a time.

But the competition is intense. The three automakers have been close on each other’s heels, competing not only in developed markets such as the U.S. and Europe, but also in the emerging markets of China and the rest of Asia.

Volkswagen, which nudged GM out of second in the first half of the year, stayed ahead of the Detroit automaker even though GM had its best third-quarter global sales since 1980, led by strong sales in China and growth in North America.

GM does not give annual sales projections, but Volkswagen has said it might deliver 10 million vehicles this year.

General Motors was the No. 1 selling automaker for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008. GM retook the sales crown in 2011, when Toyota’s production was hurt by the quake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

Toyota made a comeback in 2012, and kept that lead in 2013. GM is going strong despite issuing massive recalls this year totaling more than 30 million vehicles.

6 Car Sounds You Should Not Ignore!

The following article is from http://snip.ly/3FbQ:

6 Car Sounds You Should Not Ignore

1. A Diesel-Like Clattering in Your Gas-Powered Car.

Worst-Case Scenario: Detonation, also known as pinging or knock.

Why: Things like bad gasoline or incorrect ignition timing cause the fuel to go boom too early. If left unchecked, you risk serious engine damage.

What To Do: Switch to higher octane gas, which resists detonation, and check the timing.

2. Questlove Drumming Underneath Your Car when It’s Moving, Increasing with Vehicle (Not Engine) Speed.

Worst-Case Scenario: Failing universal joint or driveshaft bushing.

Bad Stuff That Can Happen: U-joint fails completely, driveshaft digs into pavement, and the car pole-vaults and crashes.

Why: Both the U-joint and bushings simply wear out. The noise comes from the driveshaft flopping around like an ailing fish.

What To Do: Inspect the driveshaft for worn or broken parts, replace them, or get to a mechanic.

3. A Million Fingernails Scraping on a Chalkboard when You Start Up the Engine or Accelerate from a Stop.

Worst-Case Scenario: Loose accessory drive belt.

Bad Stuff That Can Happen: Your enraged neighbors will kill you.

Why: The belt is slipping on the pulleys, either due to age and wear, or improper tension.

What To Do: Inspect the belt for minor cracks or fraying. Replace as needed.

4. Sharp Tapping Like a Clunky Washing Machine, Increasing with Engine RPM.

Worst-Case Scenario: Connecting-rod knock.

Bad Stuff That Can Happen: Broken rod blasts hole through the engine block; metal parts and flaming oil shoot out.

Why: Usually a failure of a rod bearing due to oil starvation.

What To Do: Stop driving immediately. If caught early, the bearing can be replaced.

5. Grinding Metal—Think Snowplow on Pavement.

Worst-Case Scenario:Brake pad or shoe material completely gone.

Bad Stuff That Can Happen: Destroyed brake rotors or drums. Car may pull to one side under braking and possibly crash.

Why: Brake pads should make a squeal when the pad has worn down to the danger zone. But sometimes we don’t notice this sound.

What To Do: Fix the brakes.

6. A Whine Like an Empty Ice Machine When You Turn the Steering Wheel, Especially at Low Speed.

Worst-Case Scenario:Failing power-steering pump.

Bad Stuff That Can Happen: Loss of steering assistance.

Why: Low power-steering fluid or a pump groaning to death.

What To Do: Check the fluid level, top off as needed, and get ready to buy a new pump.

More Cars Getting Stop-Start Despite Driver Resistance

Gas-saving stop-start systems – that turn off the engine when the vehicle isn’t moving and restart it when the brake pedal is released – will be standard on more cars and trucks than ever before – whether drivers like it or not, reports The Detroit News.
Automotive industry analysts say the technology improves fuel economy an average of 3.5 percent – and as much as 10-15 percent in cities and heavy stop-and-go traffic. It’s been popular in Europe for years, partly because of customer demand driven by high gas prices. But it hasn’t been a hit in the United States. Detractors say the feature is annoying and makes them think their cars have stalled when the engine shuts off at a light or stop sign.
Southfield-based forecasting firm IHS Automotive says 7 percent of vehicles sold today in the U.S. have stop-start, compared to 60-70 percent in Europe; but strict federal fuel economy mandates have forced automakers to add stop-start to more vehicles, says Devin Lindsay, senior analyst of North American powertrain forecasting for IHS. He predicts 57 percent of vehicles sold here in 2020 will have the gas-saving technology.

4 Based off of 2014 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study – Midsize Sedan segment5 All the airbag (AB) systems are Supplemental Restraint Systems. All ABs (if installed) are designed to inflate only under certain conditions and in certain types of severe collisions: frontal and knee ABs typically inflate in frontal collisions; side and side curtain ABs in side collisions; Roll-Sensing Curtain ABs at a severe tilt degree, roll or lateral G-force. In all other accidents, the ABs will not inflate. To decrease the risk of injury from an inflating AB, always wear seatbelts, sit upright in the middle of the seat as far back as possible and do not lean against the door. Do not put objects in front of an AB or around the seatback. Do not use a rearward-facing child seat in any front passenger seat. The force of an inflating AB may cause serious injury or death.
